Octav was founded by Mathieu Baril and Luc Blackburn in 2022 due to the lack of accurate information in DeFi: with minimal information in regards to cost basis, profits, and losses, it made reconciliation of crypto activities a burden, especially during tax season.

"Octav" is derived from Caesar Augustus, also known as Octavian, the founder of the Roman Empire. His policies, including the reformation of the Roman taxation system, serve as inspiration for Octav's mission to revolutionize portfolio management, and simplify tax reporting in Decentralized Finance (DeFi).
